These special swimming wetsuits keep you warm when swimming in open water without restricting your movement (even the Winter suit won't stop you feeling chilly in Winter in Ireland but it will certainly take the edge off!). Wetsuits designed for surfing are impossible to swim well in, by restricting your movement and making you too buoyant. 1 mm thickness is for summer/ temperate waters. 1.5mm thickness is for colder water. If you're swimming in the Irish sea, a Winter one could be used throughout the year. A summer suit is nice in the peak summer season. If it is really warm in a summer heat wave, you could swim without a wetsuit! Wetsuit use is compulsory for open water triathlon events in Ireland.
